Sheephaven Sub Aqua Club

Dunfanaghy, Co. Donegal

EXCITING INTERESTING

We are fortunate to live along a coast with crystal clear waters, interesting rock formations and a great diversity of marine life. If exploring the underwater world of Sheephaven Bay and other waters off the Donegal coast is something you would like to do, then the Sheephaven Sub Aqua Club is just the club for you.

This very active and enthusiastic club organises dives every Saturday morning 52 weeks of the year! They also have snorkel outs from Portnablagh on Sunday mornings during the winter months. During the summer months, extra dives are organised on Sundays and Wednesdays.

The club recruit trainees in November and commence pool training in January and open water by March - generally a new diver can be trained up by late autumn. Previously trained divers from other clubs, are very welcome to join Sheephaven SAC at any time.

As well as organising dives and snorkels, a big part of what Sheephaven SAC does is to provide a very important community service by providing a Search and Recovery community sourced volunteer unit to assist the civil authorities in the event of a water based trade tragedy.

Next year marks the 100th anniversary of the sinking of what must be the most iconic wreck around Donegal if not Irish waters. Sadly, on January 25th 1917, HMS Laurentic met her doom and lies at a depth of 40 metres in Lough Swilly. She was famous before WW1 for her speed across the Atlantic. The Laurentic was 565 feet long, 67 feet wide and weighed nearly 15,000 tonnes. The Laurentic is, in the right sea conditions, a very diveable wreck. (The salvage rights are privately owned).
