In the hills surrounding the Haven Smokehouse, are located some of the peat bogs of Donegal, generated over thousands of years.

In Ireland after the peat is hand-cut, it becomes known as turf, which has been used to heat Irish homes for hundreds of years.

Today, the turf is still cut by hand, and labouriously stacked to dry.
